Studio 10 Project Space at East Quay and Studio KIND in Barnstaple have teamed up to develop a new project with a group of artists based across West Somerset and Mid/North Devon. The project will culminate in two exhibitions, featuring work made across a broad spectrum of contemporary practices, including photography, sound, textiles, sculpture, ceramics, video, writing and painting.
The project, Passing Through, is an exploration of what it means to live on the cusp of a place; from the ways in which we exist between built and rural spaces, to the intersections between different landscapes and environments, to the idea of edgelands, margins, and liminality in a broader context. Taking inspiration from the South West coastline, local landscapes and the moorland between us, the project explores the connections within our communities, whilst also acting as a kind of mapping of our geographical locations.
In August, the selected artists met for a ‘Walk and Talk’ event on Exmoor — at the ‘mid-point’ between Watchet and Barnstaple — to take a walk together along the River Barle, share ideas, and start gathering imagery and materials in response to the themes of the project. Since then, the group have been creating new work, both individually and collaboratively, ready for the first iteration of the project on display here in Studio 10 Project Space. Upon closure of this exhibition, the artists will have the chance to continue evolving their work in preparation for the exhibition to take new form at Studio KIND in February 2026.
