The students at South Molton Community College present their work ‘Through My Eyes’: a collection of portraiture, of themselves and prominent artistic figures. This work is inspired by their current study surrounding identity and the way we express and view ourselves through art.
The work in this exhibition is reflective of the year 9’s study on self portraiture within art, in which they studied artists such as: Frida Kahlo, Van Gogh, Rembrandt and Picasso. These artist studies were focused on studying the way in which the artist expressed their sense of self, and the stylistic choices these artists chose to create effect meaning within their self portraits. The students then used these studies to create a portrait within one of the art styles from their study.
This project was designed for the students to create their own sense of artistic style; through their study of other artists they were able to pick up techniques that they found fit themselves and their skill set. Turning their skills into strengths and giving them a sense of artistic identity.
Some of the portraits are reflections of the students and their view of themselves, some are artist studies, In each of these pieces their practice of technique and their ideas around visual style was the highlight of their current artistic journey that will follow them through their GCSE’s.
